The Correze department of France

We are in the Correze
The department of Correze forms part of the Limousin region of France. From the mysterious moors of the Millevaches plateau to the rolling hills of the Pays de Brive with its mild climate and verdant valleys, the Correze offers a great variety of landscapes. It is still relatively unknown as a holiday destination. Here's your chance to holiday in the green heart of France.

Alastair Sawday's Guide Review

"This immaculately restored farmhouse with amazing views has a grand inglenook in its living room, a spider's web of rafters on the top floor and a tiny stone staircase to the children's room, chldren are spoiled here with their own wing.  This is a comfortable and stylish place to stay, with heated stone floors and lovely chalky hues, music, web, TV, waders for fishing, golf clubs to borrow, and acharming English-Dutch owners down the lane.  Bedrooms have handsome wooden floors and sumptuous duvets, the big family bathroom is fabulously chic and the kitchen is made for cooks - Le Creuset baking trays, jolly crockery.  Ask Venetia to whip you up a gastro or a detox treat, there's nothing she'd like better!  Ride, pedalo, kayak, swim, forage for walnuts, stock up in Argentat on market day.  Back home, barbecue in the garden, relax on the decking, splash in the above-ground pool, or chat around the big table until the early hours with the wood-burner crackling away."

Christmas

"I came to The Cottage at Saleix exhausted, stressed and out of sorts.  After a glorious visit over Christmas and New Year 2011/2012 I left feeling energised, de-stressed and centred.  A great deal of the magic came from the cottage's tranquil and idyllic setting in rural France - blissfully peaceful without traffic or air pollution - and also the warm, luxurious comfort of the cottage itself - with the original features of a 17th century farmhouse, lovingly restored with 21st century amenities of Wifi/satellite TV, central heating and steaming power showers.  But it was Venetia and Johan's warm heartfelt welcome that made our visit so very special.  Nothing was too much trouble.  They genuinely care about their visitors - and Venetia's cuisine was scrumptiously divine.  No words can do justice to describe the experience of the Cottage-in-France, so I suggest you make a booking so you can experience it all for yourself!  With love and much appreciation."

"It was heaven staying in your cottage.  It has a wonderfully welcoming feel and is so comfortable and cosy (a rather important fact as the weather did its best to dampen our spirits!)  Not that it had a hope of doing so.  We really had a glorious time.  Wonderful walks and food to die for pouring out of your kitchen.  All washed down with extremely spoiling wines provided by Johan.  Perfect peace.  We'll be back.  Thank you."

"Thank you for providing us with such a lovely break.  The location is beautiful and so peaceful, while the cottage is an absolute delight.  It's one of the best we've been to in 30 years of renting holiday properties.  The conversion is lovely and it is so well equipped with everything one could need (right down to the wine!).  The meal you prepared was delicious and we especially enjoyed the hors d'ouevres - so nice to sit by a prepared fire with lovely food and some of Johan's excellent wine after a long day's journey.  Thank you both so much for you hospitality.

I hope we will be able to return one day.  We will certainly recommend to our Francophile friends."

July

"We spent a wonderful two weeks in the cottage at Saleix in July, with our young daughters (2 and 4). Old friends with their young sons (1 and 3) came to join us for the second week. Venetia and Johan are really super hosts and made us all feel splendidly welcome. Despite living just moments away, they struck the perfect balance between attentiveness and giving us plenty of space.

The cottage is a home from home, with a very well equipped kitchen all sorts of gadgets and appliances, and well stocked cupboards full of essentials as well as ingredients for baking. Many feasts were prepared using the impressive recipe book library, and Sarah prepared us a scrumptious last supper, which we highly recommend!

We all slept marvellously on the super comfortable beds and perfect feather pillows, accompanied by the hooting of owls drifting in through open windows. Having driven to Saleix with a well packed car, we much most appreciative of the bathroom essentials such as shampoos and shower gels which were provided, plus an assortment of other things we had forgotten.

Venetia and Johan had very thoughtfully provided all sorts of 'kit' that would be useful for young children, such as a baby bath (which two could squeeze into at a time, accompanied by squeals of delight!) potty, nappy bins, travel cot, booster seats and even a stair gate. Our daughters loved the Maisie books which Venetia kindly put in their bedroom, and we all had fun playing with french games and jigsaw puzzles.

We really had the most happy, relaxing family holiday we could have wished for in this rural idyll. An orientation outing with Sarah at the start of our stay meant we knew exactly where to find the best boulangerie, wine shop and even the local cheese factory. The staples all sorted, Sarah and Johan's suggestions for local outings were spot on: we picnicked every day, swam in rivers and lakes (the Lac d'Auriac was our favourite), went on country walks, explored the Tours de Merle and drank in the sights and smells of the market in Brive.  The beautifully landscaped aquapark in Argentat was a favourite spot which we returned to several times, and we all had a marvellous afternoon at the Medieval Farm in St Julien aux Bois.

We look forward to returning and exploring the area some more. Thank you! "

Another wonderful four weeks at this superb cottage.  We have loved every minute and really value all that we have gained from finding you and the Cottage.  Thank you, too, for your work with the stables to find a wonderful riding opportunity for Phoebe, like Prada las year, Boogie has "burned" a very strong "brand" in her heart.  Em has loved the time she has had here and with you, and as for Pippin - words fail us!  I think she will find Battersea Park just a little "below par".  We have been thoroughly spoiled and will miss you all heaps.

Perfect in every way.  From the beautiful, comfortable cottage through its garden with its amazing views; to drinking good wines in even better company.  Thank you very very much.

Tonight concludes our second wonderful stay at this very special cottage in this glorious part of the world.  We are so sad to be leaving as it has been such a happy and resorative time - again!  Venetia and Johan thank you for the care and thoughtfulness you show.  See you again in the summer (your summer!).

Something about this Cottage restores one.  The kids thought so too.

Lovely visit.  Quiet, beautiful place; fine food and wine; and the space to reflect, relax and read.  So terrible, we may be back next week.  Or the one after that.  Even for a winter or spring pension; a sense of time and place as good as it gets.

On TV there is a commercial with the slogan: "A vacation you don't want to leave from".  This has been such a vacation, where we enjoyed your little shire.  The Cottage exceeded our expectations and the exterior even more.  We have relaxed to a whole new level, and have experienced tranquility to a new state of mind.  Thank you.  We hope to come back some time in the future.
